Inspiration - 'Silver Birch'

With it's papery bark and minimalist markings that work their way around the trunk in an imperfect rythym, the birch tree is a designer's dream. They're beautiful in their simplicity. I love how their bark peels off like a sheet of parchment, like natures emergency sketchbook.

It was their monochrome, simplistic beauty that inspired this log-like vase (and maybe getting a bit too deep into Twin Peaks over lockdown?), but it turns out that the birch tree is symbolic of new beginnings, which seems particularly fitting for the relaunch of my Studio Exclusives. And in early Celtic mythology bundles of birch twigs were used to drive out the spirits of the old year. I think we'll all be keen to stock up on birch twigs by the time the end of 2020 rolls around!

Let’s take a glimpse at some of the inspiration behind the piece shall we?
