Kiln Hire

Looking for a kiln to hire?

I have a 129L Skutt electric kiln which is available to hire by experienced ceramicists when I’m not using it for my own work. Keep scrolling down to find full kiln specs and the service I provide.

If you’re interested in booking me and the kiln for my firing service please fill in the form below. Full firing terms and conditions can be found at the bottom of the page.

Kiln Specs
Skutt KMT1018 electric toploader with 129L capacity. The internal firing capacity is approx 53cm (w) x 40cm (d).
Shelves are circular and have a 21” (53cm) diameter. I have 3 full shelves, and one half shelf available to use.
Max temperature: 1260c

Prices
Bisque firing: £45
Glaze firing: £65

Prices are based on hiring the full kiln, and include my time to load, programme, and fire the kiln. I don’t offer a firing service for individual pieces or half loads, but Dundee Ceramics Workshop do! Thick work which requires a pre-heat and slow firing will incur an additional charge.

Payment can be made either online once your booking in confirmed, or by card when you drop off your work.

Pick My Brain
If you’d like to pick my brain about a project you have in mind I can also offer a Ceramic Consultation service. I’m happy to chat all things ceramics, design, technical aspects of ceramics and pottery, and offer advice. I have over 8 years of working in ceramics and running a business, and currently work part-time as the Senior Ceramics Technician at DCW, and have a wealth of knowledge that I’m always happy to share!

Ceramic Consultation: £45 per hour

Firing Terms and Conditions
Once your booking is confirmed details of the clay and glazes that you are using must be emailed in advance of the firing. Please include photos of labels, and links to the materials you are using where possible.

Greenware pieces should be fully dry, and any work which requires a preheat and slow firing (such as chunky sculptural work) will incur an additional fee.

Glazed pieces should have 1cm clearance between any glaze and the kiln shelf, and all bases must be wiped fully clear of glaze.

If you suspect your glaze may run you must provide a drip tray (with a rim!) to sit fully under your work - if you’re unsure how to do this please ask and I can advise. You can provide this batt-washed, or I can apply batt wash for you.

Faults in ceramic objects’ structures and glazes may result in breakages or may only become visible once firing is completed. I will not be held liable for any damages, cracking, unexpected results, or faults of this nature.

I will always strive to handle your work with care and respect, but accidents can and do happen. If an item is damaged due to an accident I will offer a discount on the cost of your firing service, but will not be held liable for any damages of this nature.

I will not fire any work that I deem unsafe or risky (eg. too thick, combustable inclusions, poorly glazed work).

I do not fire wild clay, sorry!

Work must be collected promptly after the work is unloaded, I sadly don’t have the space to store work for long periods of time.

Any damage to the kiln or kiln furniture due to poorly made or glazed pieces will be charged to you. This price will vary depending on the damage incurred, but prices for kiln furniture are detailed below.

Price per replacement kiln shelf = £65
Price per replacement half kiln shelf = £45
Price per replacement shelf prop = £8.50

Minor shelf damage (ie small glaze runs that can be scraped off) = £10
Moderate shelf damage (ie glaze or clay that melts which needs chiselled off and shelf repairs) = £25
